2019 ATA Show – Thermacell Radius 2.0

New for 2019, Thermacell released an improved version of their 2018 award-winning Radius zone mosquito repellent.  Like the first generation radius, it features a rechargeable Li-ion battery which makes it substantially more airline-friendly versus a typical butane-powered repellant. The Radius 2.0 features a 10% longer battery life allowing for a 6.5 hr run time.  Since the unit isn’t butane powered, it works well even at higher elevations where butane units often fail (7-8k feet+).   Some additional improvements over the previous version include water and weather resistance as well as improved airflow for more reliable operation.

At $19.99 for a 40 hour refill it costs roughly six cents more per hour to run versus the traditional Thermacell.  However, if you have the ability to easily recharge the ease of use far outweighs the few extra pennies.

In the event you can’t easily recharge or want a lightweight, family sized system to bring with you in the back country, they offer a compact version that attaches to most common isobutane tanks (which many backpackers/hikers will already have in their pack).   At only 4 ounces it’s a nice creature-comfort to have in your gear.
